Because willow bark contains substances that have similar effects to the chemical drug acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), there are similar effects in the body. Plant salicin is especially important. The intestinal flora converts it to salicylic acid.
Salicylic acid has antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. However, these effects are weaker than in the case of ASA. Willow bark extracts are now used to support standard therapy for back pain, inflammatory rheumatism, and osteoarthritis.
